An expansion pack called Beyond the Dark Portal added two new campaigns and ten new heroes. Once an area has been explored, it continues to be semi-revealed after units are no longer within sight of that area (called "Fog of War map masking"): the terrain is remembered, but you can no longer see enemy units on that part of the map. The resolution is doubled to SVGA 640×480 (which still doesn't let you see much of the screen), maps come in multiple sizes, oil is added as a third resource type, naval and aerial units are added, and up to nine units can be given orders at a time.
This time, the humans have allies, such as elves, gnomes and dwarves, and form the Alliance, while orcs have allies such as trolls, goblins and ogres, and form the Horde.
